How to choose and care for a 3D-printed lamp

Choose a lamp by what you want it to do before choosing its colour. A soft glow beside a bed, a sculptural object on a shelf and a focused work light are different jobs. That Odd Piece's Rubrik and Luma Bloom are ambient accent lamps for the first two.

Accent light or task light?

An accent lamp adds atmosphere and a small pool of light to a room. Both lamps here are intended for soft mood lighting. If you need concentrated light for reading, detailed work or a main room light, select a product designed for that task.

Think about where the lamp will stand, what you want to illuminate, and how the USB cable will reach its power source. Leave space to operate the inline on/off and dimmer switch without pulling the lamp across a surface.

Rubrik: compact geometry and a coloured glow

Rubrik is a 4 × 4 grid of cubes with a glowing core. The overall form measures 122 × 122 × 122 mm, or 12.2 cm on each side. Both its shell and diffuser plate are printed in PLA+.

The lamp colour and diffuser colour are separate choices. The diffuser sits at the centre and colours the light spilling through the gaps, so check both selections rather than judging the lamp by the shell colour alone.

Luma Bloom: a translucent flower shade

Luma Bloom pairs a translucent PETG shade with a sculpted PLA+ petal base. Its shade measures approximately 16 × 16 × 19 cm and the base 16 × 16 × 8 cm. Compare those component dimensions with the space you have.

The translucent shade gives a different appearance from Rubrik's geometric gaps. Look at the product photographs with the lamp switched on and off to decide which form fits the bedside, desk or shelf.

Use the supplied LED kit

Both products include a flat LED kit with three light modes—warm white, cool white and daylight—plus adjustable brightness and a USB cable with an inline switch. Use only the kit supplied with the lamp. The product instructions do not establish compatibility with other bulbs or light assemblies.

Keep the lamp away from moisture and sustained heat above 60°C, and switch it off when unattended. The material's care limit is not a reason to substitute a different light source.

Clean gently and keep it dry

Switch off the lamp before cleaning. Wipe the printed parts with a dry, soft cloth. Keep the electrical kit dry and follow the instructions supplied with it. For the difference between the printed materials, read PLA and PETG for home objects.
